Yesterday, a new public charging hub for electric trucks was inaugurated at the Volvo site in Ghent. The infrastructure was developed by Milence, in collaboration with the Volvo Group.

The charging site is part of a broader zero-emission mobility hub in North Sea Port. Air Products is building a hydrogen filling station at the same location, turning the Volvo site into an important hub for sustainable heavy transport in the region.

Strengthening the logistics chain and the wider SDR region

The charging hub is located close to the R4 motorway, in an area where large flows of goods converge on a daily basis. The Volvo site in Ghent is a crucial link in the group's international value chain, and the new charging capacity supports both its own logistics and those of transporters operating between Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Germany.

By combining electric charging infrastructure and future hydrogen facilities in one location, a multimodal hub is created that offers companies in the region greater certainty about the availability of sustainable mobility solutions.

Powerful charging infrastructure for heavy transport

The new hub has four fast chargers up to 400 kW, suitable for all brands of electric trucks. The infrastructure is designed for intensive use, with drive-through charging points and facilities for drivers. In a next phase, Milence will switch to ultra-fast charging, which will allow trucks to fully charge in approximately 30 to 45 minutes. This will make longer electric routes feasible and reduce downtime for operators.

Milence applies a rate of €0.379/kWh (excluding VAT) in Belgium, which makes electric driving more attractive for transport companies in the region.

Air Products strengthens zero-emission hub with hydrogen infrastructure

In addition to the electric charging hub, Air Products is building a hydrogen refuelling station with liquid storage on the same Volvo site, specifically designed for heavy transport. The combination of electric and hydrogen infrastructure makes the Ghent site one of the first locations in Belgium where multiple zero-emission technologies come together. This offers companies flexibility to make their fleets more sustainable based on their logistics profile and energy needs.

Key figures

  • Future: ultra-fast charging (30–45 min)
  • Rate: €0.379/kWh (excl. VAT)
  • Partners: Milence (operator), Volvo Group (site & collaboration), Air Products (hydrogen station)
  • Regional impact: strengthens sustainable logistics, supports transition in the SDR region, multimodal zero-emission hub
  • Location: Volvo site in Ghent, Schansakker exit (R4), North Sea Port
