Report final event Map-it CCU: from vision to action for a sustainable industry

On 27 May 2025, the final event of the Map-it CCU project took place at the historic St Peter's Abbey in Ghent. The event drew a full house, confirming the high level of interest in Carbon Capture, Utilisation & Storage (CCUS). The closing event attracted a wide and diverse audience: industry players, technology experts, policymakers and academics.
Industry plays a crucial role in our economy, but it also faces huge climate challenges. As part of a broader approach, CCUS can contribute to making industry more sustainable, along with other strategies such as efficiency gains, electrification and deployment of renewable raw materials.
Yet the practical application of CCUS, from technology to infrastructure and use of the captured CO₂, is complex. Companies and policymakers have questions about the feasibility, business model and regulation of CCUS.

Map-it CCU: a decision model for the future
To address these challenges and answer “how do we test CCU technologies in an industrial context?”, the Map-it CCU project was initiated by CAPTURE and VITO. Companies within Smart Delta Resources Flanders provided valuable input and feedback during the development of the project.
This project developed:
- A knowledge matrix: collects, structures and disseminates knowledge on CCUS technologies and value chains;
- A decision tool: develops a decision framework that helps companies make informed choices around CO₂ capture, reuse and storage;
- A MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) offering companies and experts free access to training on CCU technologies, with training and exercises for making strategic choices. More info will follow soon via our partner CAPTURE.

Next steps: practical application and knowledge sharing
As knowledge around Map-it CCU continues to evolve, the team will soon launch new initiatives to support companies and disseminate knowledge.
- Conduct studies for selected SDR partners and formulate targeted advice on CO₂ capture.
- Apply the knowledge matrix to some value chains within the Ghent part of North Sea Port.
The mix of attendees confirmed the growing support for CCUS and the need for cooperation to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable industry. At the successful concluding Map-it CCU meeting, practical experiences were shared, the technology selection model presented and future plans discussed. Importantly, this event did not mark an end point, but rather a starting point for further implementation of CCUS solutions.
